Nassau County Police said the 65-year-old Roslyn Heights woman contacted the agency on Wednesday, Oct. 16, saying she had been the victim of a scam.
She told investigators that she received a call from “Amazon” regarding her iPad and was directed to speak with a purported agent at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to report fraud.
After contacting the purported FTC, the woman was informed that she had open warrants and was directed to meet a federal agent on the corner of Power House Road and Roslyn Road. She was also told to place $32,000 in a box and put it inside the agent’s car.
The woman followed the instructions and realized the next morning that she had been scammed. While she was at the Nassau County Police Department’s Sixth Precinct reporting the incident, she was again contacted and instructed to bring $40,000 to the same location.
Officers arrested 35-year-old Malkit Singh, of Carteret, New Jersey, after the victim confirmed he was the same man she had met the previous day.
Singh was arrested on suspicion of grand larceny and attempted grand larceny.
